Seismology for Environmental Monitoring: From Storage Sites to Storms - ESC2026 Session 59

Dear all,

The General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission (ESC 2026) will take place in Istanbul in September 2026.

We invite you to submit an abstract to our session “Environmental Monitoring and Seismology across Scales: From Storage Sites to Storms” via
https://www.esc2026.org/abstract-submission.html
Deadline: 15 March 2026

The session brings together recent work in environmental and meteo-seismology, highlighting how seismic, infrasound, and related geophysical observations, combined with advanced signal detection and array methods, are used to monitor Earth-system processes, from CO₂ storage and geothermal systems to hydrological, cryospheric, atmospheric, and surface processes.

Topics of interest include:

  • Seismic and geophysical monitoring of CO₂ storage sites, geothermal systems, subsurface deformation, and groundwater dynamics

  • Re-purposing existing stations for environmental and meteo-seismological applications

  • Seismological and infrasound studies of storms, precipitation, avalanches, landslides, glaciers, and other environmental processes

  • Developments in machine learning, signal detection, and array analysis for weak or non-impulsive sources

  • Integration of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), dense nodal arrays, and traditional sensors for advanced array-based and multi-sensor processing

  • Interdisciplinary approaches combining seismology with meteorology, hydrology, glaciology, and environmental science

We particularly welcome contributions demonstrating interdisciplinary collaboration, linking seismology with meteorology, geodesy, hydrology, oceanography, glaciology, and environmental engineering.

Conveners:
Pauline Kruiver, Graça Silveira, Daniela Kühn, Laura Petrescu, Eleonore Stutzmann

Kind regards,
Laura, on behalf of the conveners
