Von: Meier, Prof. Dr. Thomas thomas.meier@ifg.uni-kiel.de

Dear Colleagues,

ISC has been collecting, analysing, and publishing manual picks of body wave arrivals for more than 100 years. In the last decades, automated picking methods have been developed and refined by various groups, but due to the variable methods and quality the ISC has so far tried to avoid using reported automated picks unless they are manually reviewed.

We would like to invite you to participate in a workshop on ‘Automated and manual picking of body wave phases’ to be held on September 22 in Corfu (Greece) at the Ionian University on Sunday before the opening of the 39th General Assembly of the ESC (ESC2024). At the workshop, we would like to discuss the following topics:

  1. Quality and uncertainties of manual picks reported to ISC
  2. Which new methods and tools for automated picking of first and later body wave phases are available?
  3. Which data sets of automated picks are available and how can their quality be assessed?
  4. Options and formats for storing and publishing data sets of automatically determined picks

We invite analysts, developers, researchers, and representatives of seismological agencies to participate in this workshop. Please write to me if you are interested in participating and if you would like to give a presentation on topics listed above.

We would like to ask you for your response by May 5, 2024. Please forward this email to colleagues who might be interested.

We are looking forward to your reply!

Best regards,

Thomas Meier on behalf of the organizing committee of the workshop
