ORFEUS Forum is the central communication hub for the ORFEUS community.

Account creation

Everyone is allowed to join the community forum, but newly created accounts need to be approved by one of the administrators. Most of the topics are publicly visible, but replying is allowed only for logged in users.

Account preferences

To navigate to your account preferences:

  1. Click on your avatar in top right corner of the screen
  2. Click on the profile account in the menu
  3. Select “Preferences”

:information_source: To select your tracking preferences, navigate to “Tracking” tab under “Preferences”. Here you can adjust the notification behavior for Categories and Tags. If someone starts a topic in given category or tags it with given tag, the notification settings will be inherited from ones defined here.

:information_source: Under each topic you can also find notification settings for given topic which allow overriding global notification settings defined in the profile preferences.

:information_source: Default notification scheme for new users:

  • Immediate notification when new topic are created in following categories:
    meetings-and-workshops
  • All other categories will be bundled in a weekly activity e-mail

:information_source: Notification schemas for specificprivate groups within ORFEUS are pre-configured, but we strongly suggest reviewing them in your account tracking preferences tab.

Navigating the forum

Categories

Categories are (nested) bins that allow grouping discussions. For example, information about the maintenance of EIDA data centers can be found by navigaitng to eida/maintenance/ and news about (meta)data in eida/datasets/. Also, both sub-categories plus generic EIDA topics can be found by simply navigating to eida/ category.

You can see the category tree and descriptions by clicking on All categories in the side menu.

To create a topic new topic:

  1. Go to proper category (e.g. user-support/)
  2. Click on the “New Topic” button
  3. Type in title, tags (optional), message and make sure right category is used
  4. Click on the “Create Topic” button

Tags

Tags allow labeling of topics created in the categories (see above). For example, clicking on “metadata” tag will list all topic related to metadata across entire forum.

Tailored updates about (meta)data changes

:information_source: You can follow news related to your network of interest by going to the all tags page, selecting tag (e.g. net_cr for news about the CR network and picking suitable notification scheme from the notifications menu (bell button).

Alternatively, you can go to your account preferences and adjust the tracking preferences as it has been shown earlier in this FAQ.

Messages

Messages is a collection of inboxes which can be used in a way similar to e-mail. Each user has his own private inbox which can be used to exchange private messages between single/multiple users or entire groups of users.

To write new private message:

  1. Go to your inbox
  2. Click “New Message” button
  3. Select recipients (users or entire groups)
  4. Write the message
  5. Send it by clicking on the “Message” button

If someone send a message to group you belong to, new inbox will appear in the side menu under “Messages” node.

Personal chat

Personal chat allows instant messaging between users or within groups.

To start a new chat:

  1. Click on the “+” button next to the “Personal chat”
  2. Select user you would like to start chatting with
  3. Write your message
  4. Press Enter to send the message
