Access to data from the Aegean Sea region

Dear ORFEUS Community, please find below a message from the EIDA Management Board (EMB).

Due to the present seismic activities in the Aegean Sea the number of requests for data download for seismic stations in that region have exploded and placed intense pressure on the EIDA services. We are aware that certain requests for Greek networks are failing or are severely delayed, in particular requests for large numbers of stations and long time windows. We thank users for their understanding and patience. Also, EIDA thanks the NOA EIDA node for their dedication to keep all the data open at this time of crisis. In the medium term, the EIDA team will continue to streamline services so that user numbers can scale in times of crisis.

Thank you and best wishes,
Carlo - on behalf of the EMB.

Dear All, please find below recommendations from the EIDA Technical Committee:

Some advices in order to maximise your chances of getting data and lower the pressure on EIDA during the Santorini Crisis:

  • Set number of parallel connections to 1
  • Use low sample rate channels! (BH instead of HH)
  • Use a client like fdsnws2sds that supports resume
  • Use a high number of retries (e.g. 5)
  • Use a proper timeout knowing that the connection will be slow (e.g. 120 secs)

Thank you for your comprehension.

Thank you and best wishes,
Carlo.
